The government has announced special incentives for new media outlets from the state budget.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made this announcement while delivering a speech in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, on Friday.
In his message, President Muizzu highlighted that the biggest challenge for the journalism sector in the Maldives is difficulty in obtaining sustainable income, adding that the government plans to launch special incentives for press, from the state budget.
The president said that the initiative was realized with the support of the People’s Majlis.
Extending warm regards and commendations to journalists on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, President Muizzu recognized their invaluable contributions and dedication.
Shedding light on the vital role journalists play in the progress and prosperity of a nation, Muizzu stressed that they are tasked with reporting daily event, raising awareness within society, bridging the gap between the government and the people, as well as being the voice for public to share their concerns with the authorities.
Assuring that his administration remains committed to address the needs and aspirations of journalists, Muizzu encouraged journalists to broadcast accurate information and urged the public to remain cautious, as well as to carefully and thoroughly consider all news.
The people have also been urged to always seek out the truth.
Muizzu went on to encourage journalists to uphold their national responsibilities with integrity and urged the government, journalists, service providers, and all members of the general public to work together in unity, towards the common goal of progressing the nation, improving conditions, and achieving the aspirations of the people.
