A man has been remanded for attempted drug smuggling.

The Criminal Court remanded the man, who was arrested upon arrival at the post office to collect a package that contained narcotics.

The 36-year-old Maldivian man was remanded for a period of 30 days.

His remand period will expire on 8 May 2024.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) conducted a controlled delivery operation to trace the person who was to collect the package that contained illegal narcotics, after authorities were informed that the package that was brought in via post contained drugs.

According to the extraction report on his mobile device, he was known to have been largely involved in drug peddling operations.

The Criminal Court order states that he was arrested in connection with several drug smuggling cases on the past as well.

Therefore, it is clear that he is actively involved in the drug trade.

His remand has been ordered by the court, in the interest of the safety and security of the public.
