The greenhouse and hydroponics project in Kihaadhoo island of Baa atoll has been completed under the Bank of Maldives (BML) ‘Small Grants Fund’.
The announcement was made by the country’s national bank in a publication on Wednesday.
BML revealed that the project was carried out by local NGO Kihaadhoo Development Society (KIDS).
It was funded under the bank’s ‘Small Grants Fund’.
As part of the project, four hydroponics systems were established with 180 slots in each system to grow more than 700 plants at once.
BML revealed that the revenue generated from the project will be utilized for the activities carried out by the NGO.
The NGO has also conducted training sessions to interested locals in collaboration with the island’s Women’s Development Committee (WDC).
The training sessions were conducted in a bid to educate the community and raise awareness regarding hydroponics and farming.
As part of BML’s series of 12, high-impact monthly community initiatives leading up to its 40th anniversary celebrated back in November 2022, the bank launched the Small Grants initiative as a fifth of the series, in March 2022.
The country’s national bank revealed that through the initiative, eight winning projects will be selected to win a grant of MVR 250,000 each, to implement their plan successfully. It was opened for NGOs to carry out community-based projects that address environmental issues and promote sustainable development.
