Council members of Vaikaradhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll have urged the administration to implement a housing project in the island.
This was done during a meeting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held with the island’s council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC) on Monday.
The meeting saw the councilors briefing the president on the most pressing concerns facing island residents, of which the most urgent one is the housing crisis.
They also noted that several residents had to move to another island due to lack of employment opportunities.
Urging the administration to provide more employment opportunities for residents, the councilors sought from the government to implement a project to modernize the island’s roads.
They also sought from the government to build a mosque on the island.
Discussions also revolved around suggestions to develop the tourism sector as well as the need to bring an uninhabited island under the jurisdiction of Vaikaradhoo.
The meeting saw Vaikaradhoo WDC members talking about the resources required to develop the sports sector for women.
Listening to these concerns, the president assured that the issues raised by the council would be looked into.
The meeting also saw members of the president’s Cabinet of Ministers, accompanying the President, providing updates on the government’s efforts to address the concerns raised.
