Council members of Thuraakunu island in Haa Alif atoll, have urged the government to implement development projects planned for the island, swiftly.

This was done during a meeting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held with the island’s council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC) on Saturday.

Discussions at the meeting revolved around a number of issues related to the progress of the island, including the need for road construction, establishing a Maldivian Islamic monument and developing sports facilities for youth.

Further, the councilors urged the government to bring nearby uninhabited island Van’gaaru under their jurisdiction.

They identified the lack of space at the council office, school and issued with the island’s harbor as some of their most pressing concerns.

In addition to this, they conveyed eagerness of the residents, for the government to implement a land reclamation project.

Concerns were also raised regarding the power crisis as well as challenges surfacing for the island's health center.

The meeting also saw Thuraakunu WDC members briefing the president on their concerns, mainly regarding budget constraints.

President Muizzu pledged to engage with relevant authorities to address the concerns raised by the council and seek agreeable solutions.

The ministerial delegation accompanying the president shared the latest updates on the government's efforts on the issues raised by the council.
