The government is to reintroduce helicopter flight services.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made the decision on Sunday, following recommendation from his Cabinet of Ministers.
Extensive deliberations were held on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation at the cabinet meeting.
The president decided to introduce safe helicopter flight services in the Maldives, following discussions.
As such, the president decided to authorize 'Medivac' and 'Search and Rescue' services which will use twin-engine helicopters to initiate helicopter operations.
In accordance with this, public transportation via heliport would require a permit, other than the authorized services.
In addition to this, the president has also announced measures to accommodate a heliport at the Velana International Airport (VIA) and measures to establish a heliport in another location if required.
Muizzu also pledged to modify the structural framework of the Civil Aviation Authority, with which provisions and compensation to incentivize technically qualified individuals from the industry will be incorporated. This step will ensure their sustainability in the sector as well.
