The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has decided to provide relief funds to 70 households affected by the floods that incurred damages in their wake on 31 December 2023.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, NDMA revealed that damages incurred by the 70 houses affected by the heavy rains, amounted over MVR one million.
With this, NDMA announced the decision to provide a total of MVR 457,242 in relief funds to these houses.
These funds include MVR 248,381 to be provided to 34 households as compensation for damage to the buildings and MVR 208,861.60 to be provided in 20 percent of the total compensation for damage to essential household items and property of 65 houses.
The agency has also shared some of the information of calls they responded to on the day of the heavy rain showers that caused flooding:
- The number of calls to report flooding was at 164
- The number of first-responded houses was 140
- The total number of people provided temporary shelter was 42 from eight houses
- 10,100 sandbags were provided to be stacked at the entrance of affected houses
- During the first response efforts, a total of MVR 179,275 was spent on temporary shelter and required equipment
Sunday’s heavy rains caused flooding in the entire capital Malé City, as well as its suburban extension Hulhumalé and Hulhulé, causing losses to the public and making it the highest rainfall recorded in Hulhulé in recent history.
As such, Hulhulé accumulated 179.7 millimeters of rain and Malé City observed 118.2 millimeters of rainfall.
Authorities earlier revealed that damages were incurred to 140 homes due to flooding in the capital city, following continuous rain showers since early Sunday. Damages were caused by water entering homes, water rising from the ground and water leakage.
Coordination efforts were carried out jointly by officials of NDMA, Maldives Red Crescent, Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the city council.
