A foreigner has died while doing time at Maafushi Prison.

The deceased inmate has been identified as Peter Thomas Duss. He passed away at the age of 59.

Maldives Correctional Service revealed that Peter was rushed to the Maafushi Prison Medical Center and given CPR, after he collapsed inside his cell.

After inspection and checking to see if the Swiss national was breathing, the doctor at the medical center pronounced the man dead at around 04:01pm.

The Swiss national was remanded pending the outcome of his trial, in connection with drug peddling charges.

The corrections authority had also informed relevant authorities such as the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the National Integrity Commission following the inmate’s death.
