An expatriate living illegally in the Maldives has been arrested and remanded for holding an individual hostage.
Arrested in connection with the case is Mohamed Arif Hosen, 37 and native to Bangladesh.
Upon being presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing, the Bangladeshi national was given a 15-day remand period.
The court order states that the expatriate, who had been residing in the Maldives illegally, is suspected to have indulged in acts of violence and assault along with others.
The court order goes on to reveal that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has submitted video footage showing such acts, to the court as evidence.
Further, he also could have the intention to flee as he was residing illegally in the country.
The police institution is currently conducting further investigations in connection with the case.
This comes at a time a Maldivian man was arrested in connection with a similar case on August 29 this year, for holding someone hostage inside a house in capital Malé City.
In addition to this, a migrant worker who was being held hostage inside a house in the capital city, had escaped and sought help from the public on October 8 this year as well.
