President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the presidential candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) showed a beautiful example of democracy in this year's presidential election, says Vice-President of the Elections Commission, Ismail Habeeb.
Habeeb made this statement while speaking at the press conference held on Wednesday night to announce the official results of the 2023 Presidential Election.
Speaking at the presser Habeeb expressed his gratitude for President Solih for accepting the election results and announcing them, even though he did not win the presidential election.
Habeeb noted that in some of the previous elections, those who lost had refused to accept the results and blamed the commission for their failure. He claimed that nothing of the sort occurred during this year's election.
Habeeb stated that this year's presidential election was a peaceful, free and fair election, without intimidation. Stating this is the best election held by the election so far, Habeeb noted that this was the result of a lot of people’s honest, sincere hard work
This year's presidential election was won by the People's National Congress (PNC)'s candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with a total of 129,159 votes. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won a total of 109,868 votes.
The second round of voting in this year’s presidential election took place from 8am to 5pm, on 30 September.
A total of 282,804 were eligible to vote in the second round of the presidential election and official results shows that 246,915 people voted in the election.
This included 239،027 valid votes and 7،888 invalid votes.
This election saw an 87.31 percent voter turnout.
