Eight candidates competed in the first round
It will be announced and publicized in the government gazette
EC has allocated September 16 – 17 for now

The Elections Commission has revealed that voters will be given two days to reregister for the second round of the 2023 Presidential Election, to be held later this month.

This was revealed by Elections Commissioner Fuwad Thoufeeq in a Twitter post on Sunday.

As such, he revealed that a very short period of two days will be given for re-registration for those who want to change the place of voting.

He added that as of now, EC has allocated September 16 – 17 for voter re-registration.

However, EC is yet to confirm it and once it is confirmed, it will be announced and publicized in the government gazette.

Those eligible to cast their votes will be registered to cast their votes in the same polling booths as the first round, in the second round as well.

According to the Vice President of the commission Ismail Habeeb, the second round is slated for September 30.

He added that EC will soon open the window for those who wish to cast their votes in in a different location this time round.

A total of 282,395 individuals were eligible to vote in this year’s elections, however, only 80 percent cast their votes, making it the lowest voter turnout recorded in the country’s history in a presidential election.

Eight candidates competed in the first round.

As the simple majority of votes required was not reached by any candidate, front runners President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Dr. Mohammed Muizzu are headed for a run-off election.

Muizzu secured 101,180 votes in Saturday’s polls, with President Solih following closely behind with 85,935 votes.
