The site for the land reclamation and shore protection project in Thuraakunu island of Haa Alif atoll, has been mobilized.

This was revealed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on Tuesday.

As such, taking to Twitter to provide the latest updates of the Thuraakunu land reclamation and shore protection project to the public, MTCC revealed that they mobilized the project site on September 2.

Under the scope of the project, the company is required to conduct reclamation operations in an area measuring 8.16 hectares.

The construction of a revetment measuring 1,215 meters also comes under the scope of the project.

In addition to this the project entails a sand search survey as well.

The Thuraakunu land reclamation and shore protection project is valued at MVR 152.04 million.

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted the project to MTCC.

According to MTCC, Thuraakunu with a population of about 707, is known for its fisher community as well as tourism. One of the main issues and concerns that have been facing the island community for a long time has been the lack of land for the allotment of plots to residents from the island.

The island residents have also had to suffer due to beach erosion.

These issues are expected to be resolved once these projects are implemented.

Physical work for the project will only begin after an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is carried out.
