President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has officially inaugurated the newly upgraded harbor of Foakaidhoo island in Shaviyani atoll.

The newly upgraded harbor was officially unveiled during a ceremony held in Foakaidhoo, on July 9, as part of President Solih’s recent brief tour of Shaviyani atoll to launch his re-election campaign.

The project was contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on 29 December 2019, to be completed within 500 days.

Under the scope of the project, MTCC was contracted to dredge 45,795 cubic meters and construct a quay wall measuring up to 464 meters.

Further, MTCC also installed a 100-meter revetment, built a breakwater measuring 507 meters and installed 2,320 square meters of harbor pavement.

MTCC also installed navigation lights and streetlights as well as mooring buoys under the project.

The project was valued at MVR 55.97 million.

Foakaidhoo harbor has been upgraded nearly 17 years since it was first constructed. The newly upgraded harbor is expected to bring much-needed ease to transportation to and from the island, for the island residents.

The island council revealed that it had been a long-awaited hope of the island community to finally find a way out of the challenges posed due to the lack of a proper harbor.

The Solih administration has made massive progress in its efforts to ensure equitable development across all inhabited islands including completing development projects that have enhanced the living standards of citizens and enabled them to live dignified lives.
