The Maldivian government has welcomed the European Union (EU)’s decision to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Maldives.

The EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) is to arrive in the Maldives to observe the upcoming Presidential polls in the island nation.

The Presidential election is slated for 9 September 2023.

The EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) is being deployed following an invitation by the Elections Commission of Maldives, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The foreign ministry stated that EU has remained a steadfast ally to the Maldives in its efforts to consolidate democracy and strengthen good governance.

This being said, the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission to the Maldives mirrors the commitment of the European Union to support the efforts of democracy consolidation and upholding rule of law in the archipelago nation.

The foreign ministry added that a free, fair and credible election is the cornerstone of the country’s democracy.

It is also essential for the continuity of the island nation’s growth, stability and prosperity, according to the government.
