Former President Mohamed Nasheed, one of the leaders of the opposition movement, has said that opposition has majority of the public, as well as parliament.

The former President made the comment in an audio message played at the opposition’s rally on Monday night.

Noting that leaders of the opposition signed an agreement to work together for the betterment of the people, Nasheed said that “prosperity for all Maldivians can only come from united efforts”.

“The 45 lawmakers signed to implement the agreement we [the opposition] made,” said the former President, highlighting that 45 MPs- including 11 from the ruling party- had signed the no-confidence motion submitted against speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

After the motion was submitted to parliament, Nasheed said that President Abdulla Yameen “has lost and should resign”, noting that the incumbent President has lost ‘in parliament, council elections and the coalition that brought him to power’.

In addition to Nasheed, a message from Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla was also read out at the rally, while Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who represents one faction of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), also spoke at the rally.

Maumoon, Nasheed, Qasim and Imran entered an agreement in March, seeking to protect the freedom, independence, autonomy and nationality of the Maldives.
