Two individuals have been arrested in connection with two different drug operations conducted by authorities.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the arrests were made as part of ongoing counter-narcotics operations across the country to curb drug trafficking and smuggling as well as crackdown on drug trafficking networks.

The operations were conducted in Milandhoo island of Shaviyani atoll and Dhevvadhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll.

The operation in Milandhoo island was conducted following a tip-off that drugs were being smuggled and abused on a wide network in the country, on January 28.

During the operation, Milandhoo police officers arrested a 34-year-old Maldivian man and searched his residence under a court order.

Three pieces of paper filled with suspected narcotics were confiscated in the raid.

The magistrate court in Feevah island of Shaviyani atoll, remanded the man by 15 days upon being presented for his remand hearing.

Meanwhile, the operation in Dhevvadhoo island stemmed from an intel report that drugs were being smuggled into the island.

Officers of the Police Intelligence Unit and the Dhevvadhoo Police Desk conducted the operation on January 26 and arrested a 36-year-old Maldivian man.

He was found in possession of two rubber packets stuffed with suspected narcotics.

The Villingili Magistrate Court has remanded the man by 15 days.

Both cases are currently under further investigation.
