A team from the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure will head to Maduvvari island in Meemu atoll in September 2022.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that a team from the planning ministry is scheduled to travel to Maduvvari in September, to hold consultations with the island residents, regarding the design of the island’s harbor.

This was announced during a meeting the president held with the island community on Saturday, as part of his ongoing tour of five islands in Meemu atoll.

Highlighting that the most pressing issues for the Maduvvari community are linked to the harbor project as well as coastal erosion, the president noted that the harbor development will only be mobilized after consultations and with the community’s input and opinions.

In an earlier meeting with the island council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC), the president discussed the harbor issue as well as issues facing the island due to coastal erosion.

The project has been halted due to issues posed by the island community, regarding the design.

Following the planning ministry team’s visit in September, the coastal protection project will also commence in the near future.

The meeting also saw President Solih announcing his plans to resume mobile laboratory services on the island.

He also announced the commencement of a new project to develop a youth center in the island, soon.

Raiymandhoo was the president’s first destination of the tour, which he began on Saturday morning.

President Solih will be touring five islands of Meemu atoll during the three-day tour. He is currently in Dhiggaru. His next destinations are Veyvah and Muli.

He is accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials.

The President’s Office revealed that during the visits, the president will be inspecting the progress of the ongoing development projects in these islands.

President Solih will participate in the ceremony marking the conclusion of the shore protection project in Dhiggaru island, as well as the ceremony to officially inaugurate the harbor and powerhouse in Veyvah island.

He will also sit down with members of the Meemu Atoll Council, island councils and Women’s Development Committees of the respective islands.

President Solih is expected to return to the capital on August 29, after concluding the visit.
