Maafushi Prison was brought under a state of emergency following the confirmation of a Covid-19 outbreak on January 14.

The state of emergency announced in Maafushi Prison has been revoked.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) revealed that they have successfully curbed the spread of Covid-19 at the prison complex.

MCS officers revealed that since the Covid-19 outbreak has been controlled, all of the inmate at the facility have also recovered from the virus.

The prison complex has since been brought back to a state of normalcy, with which the conjugal, familial and lawyer visits as well as court hearing will be held as before, under a set of safety guidelines compiled.

Maafushi Prison was brought under a state of emergency following the confirmation of a Covid-19 outbreak on January 14.

Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu revealed that 272 positive cases were confirmed from the complex.

Until the state of emergency was lifted, conjugal and familial visits as well as meetings with legal teams and court hearings were carried out online, as a safety precaution.

Earlier, the authority had transferred 17 high-risk inmates to house arrest following the confirmation of 522 positive cases from the facility.

One of them included Former President Abdulla Yameen who was transferred to house arrest on 29 April 2021 after some officers at the Maafushi Prison complex were tested positive for Covid-19. He was among the high-risk convicts transferred to house arrest for their own safety.

The last time a state of emergency was announced in the prison facility was in September 2021.
