MVR 23.6 billion is estimated to be received as free aid and state revenue
MVR 23.9 billion for recurrent expenditure and MVR 12.6 billion for capital expenses will be required for the upcoming year

The Ministry of Finance is to submit a state budget projected at MVR 37 billion for 2022.

Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer revealed that due to a gap in financing, it has been proposed to not exceed the amount

The ministry has proposed the changes observed for the country’s economic and financial status, details linked to the fiscal risk assessment of the previous year as well as the debt strategy for 2022 – 2024 to the Budget Committee of the People’s Majlis.

As such, a presentation on the 2022 – 2024 fiscal and debt strategy was shared with the committee, during a meeting.

Ameer noted that if the budget exceeds MVR 40 billion, there will be challenges to acquire finances, as a spike will be observed for the expenses required for budget financing.

He went on to state that expenses that may be cut from the state expenditure must be allocated, and action must be taken.

The projected budget for the upcoming year is MVR 33.8 billion. A total of MVR 23.9 billion is needed as recurrent expenditure, with MVR 12.6 billion required for capital expenses.

The ministry has set a MVR 500 million mark under the new policy initiative.

MVR 23.6 billion is estimated to be acquires as income and free aid for the state in the upcoming year. With this being said, MVR 13.4 billion is required for budget financing. Ameer noted that MVR five billion has been allocated for budget financing during 2022.

Due to unforeseen circumstances surrounding the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the government’s economy and expenditure was drastically impacted, causing a hike in debts.

Under law, the ministry is required to submit the state budget for the upcoming year by October 31, for approval from the People’s Majlis.

The People’s Majlis had approved a state budget of MVR 34.92 billion for the ongoing year, out of the initially proposed MVR 34.7 billion.
