Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun investigating bomb threats scribbled on a pillar of a mosque in Malé City.

Police is yet to confirm who was behind the act, however, officers were dispatched to the area where the Noor Mosque is located, after the scribblings were found on a pillar inside the mosque on Sunday. The mosque has since been closed off.

The writing in question, written in Dhivehi, translates to “Bangladeshis are more powerful here, we will do whatever we want. A bomb will be detonated very soon. We will destroy the Maldives”. The writing has since been scrubbed off

Police media official revealed that further investigations are currently underway.

Security forces across the entire nation have been strengthened as a special operation was launched following the IED blast that targeted the life of Former President Mohamed Nasheed on May 6. Since the terrorist attack, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) is monitoring security nationwide with close attention.

The May 6 terrorist attack which took place in the heart of the capital Malé City, injured the former president as well as several others. Nasheed is currently in the United Kingdom after being referred to doctors there while in Germany, for further treatment.
