Some services by STELCO might need to be relocated outside Malé: Mayor
'Cannot be done in a single day'
The connectivity of the Greater Malé area will allow electricity to be provided from elsewhere
The statement was made in the press conference held after the 15th official general meeting of the Malé City Council

Mayor of Malé City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that some of the service provided by state utilities company, STELCO, might be relocated out of the capital city.

The statement was made in the press conference held after the 15th official general meeting of the Malé City Council’s fourth tenure. Dr. Muizzu said that discussions to move STELCO 200 feet away shall commence. He also stressed that this cannot be done in a single day.

The mayor stated that the law assigns the responsibility of providing utilities within the council's jurisdiction to the council. And that if a third party is involved, that an agreement needs to be made with the council. Consequently, to reach an agreement, an announcement has been made to find those to do the required technical work, said Dr. Muizzu.

Dr. Muizzu also said that when this is done, an agreement will be made with STELCO, and through this discussions to relocate the utility provider over 200 feet, will commence.

He further commented that under this project, some services need to be relocated outside Malé. It was pointed out and assured that the connectivity of the Greater Malé area will allow electricity to be provided from elsewhere as well.
