President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed that an American investigations expert has arrived in the Maldives, in order to join the Police in their investigation into the terror attack against the country's first democratically elected president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
President Solih made the remarks at a press conference held on Tuesday, and clarified that four people believed to have executed the attack against Speaker Nasheed were now in police custody. Further, the President stated that a number of other people who were involved in the attempt to take former president Nasheed's life had also bene identified and detained by the state.
Adding that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) were now tracking those involved in organizing and leading the attack, President Solih stated that investigations had uncovered enough evidence to proceed in a known direction.
President Solih clarified that the American expert joining the investigation team would be tasked with discovering whether any financial transactions had been conducted in order to incentivize and facilitate the attempt against Speaker Nasheed's life. He added that Special Envoy Abbas Faiz Abbas Faiz was now monitoring the investigation, prosecution and trial of the terrorist attack against Speaker Nasheed.
Four people have been arrested following the terror attack which targeted former president Nasheed on 6 May. All four are currently in remand, and have reportedly tested positive for Covid-19, alongside a number of officers actively investigating the attack against former president Nasheed.
Speaker Nasheed was discharged from hospital last week, where he had received further medical treatment and rehabilitation following the explosion which injured four others outside his home on 6 May 2021. Speaker Nasheed's family has revealed that he is required to perform medical check-ups twice a week, and that he and his family would likely remain in Germany for another month.
