A walk for Justice: memorial rally for activist Yameen Rasheed held in Malé
Family, friends, and human rights defenders took the streets on Monday to mark a year since Yameen Rasheed, a locally prominent internet activist, was butchered to death at age 29. Demonstrators called on authorities to open the trial against suspects arrested for the brutal murder and for the family to be given more access to the proceedings. The family has said that they had been 'shunned and ridiculed' by authorities. Yameen was killed in the early hours of 23rd April, 2017, by a group of assailants that waited for him at his home in capital city Malé. He was found in the stairwell of Spetiula in Maafannu, where he resided, with over 30 stab wounds to his chest and his throat slashed.
