Majlis votes to publicize list of suspects in MMPRC corruption case

16 sitting MPs of the 19th People's Majlis are suspected to have received MVR 146 million in MMPRC corruption benefits as per the list made public by parliament on Wednesday.

The list also includes 12 former cabinet ministers and three ministers appointed under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.

Former ministers suspected to have benefited from MMPRC corruption:

1. Former Vice-President and Minister of Finance Abdulla Jihad suspected to have received MVR 200,000, investigation now in the evidence collection stage

2. Former Vice-President and Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb, suspected to have received an unclear amount in financial benefits from the MMPRC grand corruption case, investigation now in the evidence collection stage

3. Former Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, suspected to have received an unclear amount in financial benefits from the MMPRC grand corruption case, investigation now in the evidence collection stage

The list of suspects released by the People's Majlis on the MMPRC grand corruption case includes 61 former and sitting members of parliament.

In detailing information about those who benefitted from MMPRC corruption while in public office, the list notes that a number of MPs from the 17th and 19th People's Majlis had acquired illegitimate wealth from the MMPRC corruption case.

The only party from the ruling coalition not implicated in the corruption scandal is Adhaalath Party (AP), with members of parliament from all other coalition contributors having been outed as MMPRC corruption beneficiaries.

While authorities have stressed that no names present on the list can be considered guilty beyond doubt in the corruption case, the list details corruption conducted by state officials five years ago under the Yaameen administration through the illicit leasing of Maldivian islands and lagoons through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Hassan Ziyath has resigned from his position as Auditor General, after having been implicated in the MMPRC corruption suspects' list released by parliament earlier on Wednesday.

Four members of parliament elected to the 19th People's Majlis from main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MPD) were named as suspects in the MMPRC corruption case.

Leader of the MDP parliamentary group and MP for Central-Henveiru constituency Ali Azim, MP for Mulaku constituency Ibrahim Naseer, MP for Maradhoo constituency Ibrahim Shareef and MP for Kendhikulhudhoo constituency Ahmed Easa were named in the list publicized by parliament on Wednesday.

All members of parliament elected to the 19th People's Majlis from the opposition's Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) were named in the list of MMPRC corruption suspects.

Three of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom's children, Faris Maumoon, Ghassan Maumoon and Dhunya Maumoon were named in the list of those suspected to have benefitted from MMPRC corruption.

Faris Maumoon had been one of the parliament members who lost his seat during political unrest under the Yaameen administration.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof is suspected to have benefited from MMPRC corruption, along with two former minister's of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's cabinet, Zaha Waheed and Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal.

The list released on Wednesday describes Minister Mahloof's case as in the process of being sent to the Prosecutor General's Office for prosecution.

The list of suspects in the MMPRC corruption case includes the name of Auditor General Hassan Ziyath.

He is suspected from having benefited from MMPRC corruption while employed at the Pension Office. The status of the investigation against Auditor General Hassan Ziyath is listed as "information collection".

While there had been earlier reports that Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem had been named in the MMPRC corruption suspects' list, his name was not included in the list made public by the People's Majlis on Wednesday.

The list publicized on Wednesday is comprised of 281 parties suspected to have benefited from MMPRC corruption.

Out of these names, 119 correspond to top-leaders of the current government. While the report declines from detailing most financials, it does list the positions of authority held by those parties suspected of corruption presently, and in the past.

In the evidence collected, the past and presently-held positions of those suspected of corruption in the MMPRC case have been revealed, along with some financial details and other evidence, which have all be allocated points.

On the point system, those most suspect in the MMPRC case will receive ten points at most, and those with least evidence against them will receive fewer points.

The Joint Parliament Committee on National Security Services and Judiciary voted on Wednesday, to publicize a list of those suspected to have benefited from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption case. The list includes a number of top-level leaders of the incumbent Solih administration.
