Former President Mohamed Nasheed injured in explosion

India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has revealed that Speaker Nasheed will "never" be intimidated.

Taking to Twitter to wish the former president a swift recovery, the Indian EAM expressed deep concern regarding the attack.

In a Twitter post close to 12pm on Friday, ADK Hospital revealed that Former President Mohamed Nasheed is still due to undergo one more essential procedure, due to injuries attained in Thursday's explosion attack.

ADK Hospital revealed that Nasheed has had multiple successful surgeries so far, since he was rushed to the hospital on Thursday night.

Early Friday the hospital revealed that the need for further surgeries was identified through the assessment of the speaker's injuries. They revealed that a specialist team is active in performing required essential surgeries.

The Maldives Police Service released a statement a little past 11:30am, revealing that they will be holding a press conference in connection to the explosion attack in Maldives capital on Thursday night, at 2pm on Friday.

The press conference will be held at the multi purpose hall of the Iskandar Building.

Former Defense Minister, current MP for Maduvvari constituency and Vice President of opposition People's National Congress (PNC), Adam Shareef has stated that the explosion attack on Speaker Nasheed indicate a threat to national security.

Shareef described the threat as a "cowardly" act and stated that he believes this was a deliberate attempt to take the speaker's life.

Speaking with RaajjeTV in the ongoing coverage, MP For Bilehdhoo constituency Ahmed Haleem noted that the explosion attack on Nasheed is an attack on all citizens of the Maldives.

MP Haleem described Nasheed as a globally recognized leader of democracy who has done a lot for the Maldivian people including to bring positive changes the people crave.

The lawmaker revealed that this will result in an irreversible economic loss at a time Maldives is experiencing a high surge in Covid-19 cases.

He stressed that this will also affect the country's tourism industry.

The Ambassador of Germany to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Holger Seubert has described Thursday evening's explosion attack on Speaker Nasheed as "cowardly", and said that such attacks will "never" shake the stable democracy of Maldives.

The Ambassador revealed this in a Twitter post, adding that Germany condemns the attack in the strongest possible terms.

He wished for a swift and full recovery for the former president and extended well wishes for his family and the Maldivian people.

Speaker Nasheed who had to undergo three surgeries due to injuries sustained in an explosion attack on Thursday evening, is still unconscious and in the Intensive Care Unit, reports MP for Bilehdhoo constituency, Ahmed Haleem.

The MP revealed that although Nasheed is stable from the operations, his condition is still serious.

Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem has arrived at ADK Hospital, where the Majlis Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed is receiving extensive treatment for injuries attained in Thursday evening's blast.

A number of senior government officials and members of the cabinet are visiting the injured former president at the hospital.

In an appearance on RaajjeTV's ongoing coverage of Thursday evening's explosion attack, Former Minister of Housing and Malé City Mayor-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to show unity during this devastating time.

Dr. Muizzu stressed on the importance of brushing aside political division and instead, rising up in unity in the face of such crisis.

The Mayor-elect expressed concern over the attack and condemned it, shedding light on the importance of establishing an adequate CCTV system in the capital region to prevent further such attacks.

MP for Hinnavaru constituency, Jeehan Mahmood has asserted that the explosion attack on Former President Mohamed Nasheed is an attack on all of humanity.

In a special interview with RaajjeTV's ongoing coverage, the lawmaker revealed that the required cooperation will be extended to the 241 committee.

Voicing concerns over the act of terror, MP Jeehan strictly condemned the attack.

The explosion attack on Speaker Nasheed is not tolerable, said the MP.

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) in a Twitter post on Thursday night, revealed that they have observed crowded streets due to Thursday night's explosion.

The commission has reminded the public that the Maldives is currently observing alarming Covid-19 case numbers and has urged the public to adhere to Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidelines at this time of crisis.

HRCM urges the public to obey instructions and stay home in order for the relevant authorities to fulfil their duties and carry out adequate investigations into the terror act.

Raajje MV has learned that former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed is now undergoing his third surgery for injuries sustained in an explosion outside his home on Thursday night.

Speaker Nasheed had initially been treated for flesh wounds, with a CT scan taken after his head injury was attended to. The scan showed damage to former president Nasheed's lung, following which a second surgery was performed on the Speaker. The third surgery is being performed to repair damage to President Nasheed's gut.

Doctors remain concerned over threats to Speaker Nasheed's health, which cannot be downplayed as he has sustained injuries to the head and chest.

MDP parliamentary group leader and MP for North-Galolhu constituency Ali Azim has stated that Thursday night's attack was not politically motivated, and that it had targeted efforts being made by Speaker Nasheed to build a modern Maldives.

MP Azim described former president Nasheed as having always been on the frontlines in building a nurturing and modern society for Maldivian youth. MP Azim also stated that Speaker Nasheed had always chosen to further develop the island nation, and remarked now Nasheed had been aware of and cautious of a shadow-government conducting operations in Maldives.

Referring to earlier threats against former president Nasheed, MP Azim stated that it was likely the attack had occurred in relation to controversial statements made by Speaker Nasheed.

Despite shocking developments on Thursday night, MP Ali Azim stated he was very happy with the behaviour of political parties following the attack on Speaker Nasheed. Azim revealed that immediate political differences had been abandoned at parliament over the developing story earlier in the evening.

Leader of the MDP parliamentary group and MP for Central-Henveiru constituency Ali Azim has stated that it is imperative foreign experts are allowed to investigate the attack on former president Mohamed Nasheed, as soon as possible while the crime scene remains intact.

MP Azim noted that Speaker Nasheed was very vocal internationally over a number of issues as a political leader of Maldives, and that it was likely he had been targeted by foreign actors.

In addition to this, MP Azim asked that the issue not be politicized when arrests are made in relation to the attack. MP Azim went on to declare that if things were going well, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) would now have suspected malicious actors in custody, including some religious scholars.

Highlighting a failure to implement the law and other legislative issues as reasons the situation had escalated this far, MP Azim also said that more commitment was needed on behalf of institutions to prevent further losses.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has confirmed that Australian Federal Police will arrive in the Maldives to investigate the explosion which targeted Speaker Nasheed outside his home.

President Solih revealed that the Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defense Force will be assisted by foreign professionals in handling the case.

President Solih strongly condemned the attempt on Speaker Nasheed's life, describing it as an attack on the Maldives' economy and democracy.

Two officers of the Maldives National Defense Force injured in the IS-backed attempt on Speaker Nasheed's life have now been discharged from ADK Hospital after treatment.

One officer injured in the explosion was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Three officers sustained injuries, along with three others, including Speaker Nasheed's driver and bodyguard.

One MNDF officer had been discharged at 11:30pm from IGMH, while the second officer was discharged from ADK at 11:50pm.

The Trade Union in a statement declared the attempt on Speaker Nasheed's life as a dangerous and cowardly act. They have also strongly condemned the explosion which took place around 8:39pm on Thursday evening.

In addition to this, the Trade Union stated that to orchestrate such an attack in the middle of the pandemic can be taken as a threat to national security, and those tasked with protecting it in the Maldives. The Trade Union called to investigate the case as thoroughly as possible.

The United Nations in Maldives have violently condemned the attack on former president Mohamed Nasheed.

The United Nations reaffirmed their commitment to creating safer communities in the Maldives in a tweet posted hours after the attack, which injured four people.

The Islamic State has reportedly taken responsibility for the attack on former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on the Dark Web.
