Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has stated that the PGO will be seeking charges of sexual harassment against a foreign man working as a nurse at Tree Top Hospital in Hulhumale', for having abused a child who was admitted at the hospital, with investigation also extending to the hospital's management.
PG Shameem made the remarks while some media had been reporting that the male nurse from Tree Top had been allowed to leave the Maldives based on the PGO's recommendation, after the case had been filed.
Shameem revealed that while a case had been filed over the man's deportation, the PGO had advised that the Maldives Police Service investigate Tree Top Hospital's management in order to prosecute as needed over the case. However, it is believed that the male nurse had been allowed to leave the Maldives before the case of sexual harassment against a child admitted at Tree Top Hospital had been reported to Police.
While the Maldives Police Service have declined to provide details of the injuries sustained by the child, they have confirmed that such a case had been reported to them in January 2021.
Under the Maldives' law, an adult who is found to have abused a position of trust to sexually exploit a child can be sentenced to prison for a period between 15 and 18 years.
