Maldives Covid-19 tally has surpassed the 30,000-mark.

According to the latest statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Saturday night, Saturday marked the sixth consecutive day where Maldives recorded alarming numbers of new infections. As such 402 new infections were confirmed through 3,854 samples collected for testing between 6pm Friday and 6pm Saturday.

The Maldives Covid-19 tally has been pushed to 30,237 with the new cases, of which 174 were reported in the Greater Malé Region, 179 from residential islands and six from operational resorts. Further, an additional 43 new infections were confirmed from islands reserved for industrial purposes.

With 159 additional recoveries reported over the past 24 hours, the number of recoveries from Covid-19 reported across the Maldives increased to 24,934.

The number of active infections nationwide has reached with 5,221 by Saturday’s end.

Over the past 24 hours, 15 more Covid-19 patients were hospitalized for treatment, meaning that the number of hospital admissions has risen to 161.

Over the past week, Maldives confirmed a record total of 2,619 new infections. This is the highest daily cases have been reported since the pandemic surfaced in Maldives during March 2020. At a time the caseload across residential islands has also been increasing, HPA revealed that as of Saturday, there are a total of 22 islands under monitoring. This means that monitoring mechanism were lifted from Felivaru island over the past 24 hours.

The islands under monitoring are:

  • Maamigili island in Alif Dhaal atoll
  • Veymandoo island in Thaa atoll
  • Madifushi island in Thaa atoll
  • Bodufolhudhoo island in Alif Alif atoll

  • Hinmafushi island in Kaafu atoll
  • Gulhi island in Kaafu atoll
  • Maafushi island in Kaafu atoll
  • Mathiveri island in Alif Alif atoll
  • Maandhoo island in Laamu atoll
  • Gan island in Laamu atoll
  • Fonadhoo island in Laamu atoll
  • Thinadhoo island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll
  • Ukulhas island in Alif Alif atoll
  • Thulusdhoo island in Kaafu atoll

The Covid-19 caseload began decreasing at a time Maldives drove through a devastating third peak of the virus during the past few months, which led to the reintroduction of a curfew and vehicle movement restrictions across the Covid-19 epicenter Malé City and several measures nationwide. Daily cases being reported began declining soon after, leading to the curfew and some restrictions being dissolved, however, daily infections have been at a record high over the past few days, rising up to 400 this past week. Daily cases have been surging at a time Maldives observed the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee Elections in mid-April.

Maldives has been in a state of public health emergency for over a year and the last extension is set to expire on May 4.

Public health authorities continue to stress the importance of following Covid-19 health and safety measures set to control transmission of the virus, including social distancing, avoiding public gatherings, maintaining hand hygiene and effective masking while outdoors.
