The Parliament’s Judiciary Committee has been instructed to review information regarding clemency and reducing sentences for convicts.

Speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed forwarded the case for committee review during Tuesday’s People Majlis sitting.

As such, the committee has been sought to collect all data and information on convicts who are currently doing time across prison facilities, who have been observed to have addressed numerous letters regarding clemency and a possible reduction of their sentences, to the Majlis house, which have gone unanswered.

Nasheed stressed that they receive letters addressed from convicts, the most, and that the Judiciary Committee earlier held an inquiry in response to complaints lodged with the Majlis over delays in responding to their complaints and forms submitted, requesting sentence reductions and clemency.

The committee had compiled a report and forwarded recommendations to the Majlis floor as well as the President’s Office and relevant institutions. Despite the parliament having passed the recommendation penned in the report, Nasheed stressed that there has not been any action taken to implement the recommendations.

In this regard the speaker has tasked the committee with collecting data on all convicts and conducting an in-depth inquiry.
