The development of the swimming track region in the capital will be completed within this concluding year and opened to the public in January 2021, says Vice President of the Swimming Association of Maldives, Ismail Ali.
The development of toilets, stairs and shower facilities at the swimming track in the southeast side of the capital, Malé City was contracted to Maziya Construction on June 20, last year.
Although the company was contracted to complete the development project within 120 days, the project was delayed over several reasons including the Covid-19 outbreak which surfaced in Maldives during March 2020.
In an appearance on RaajjeTV’s ‘Kulhivaru File’ programme, Ali revealed that the region will become a recreation park for water sports and that they will be installing a diving platform at the region, which is expected to be completed within two to three weeks.
Ali further revealed that the region will be open to the public, however, access to the stairs will be closed after 11pm.
Highlighting that they have paid close attention to protect the region due to its location, Ali noted that they will be planting a fence measuring 400 feet around the region.
The association revealed that they will also be developing an office for the Swimming Association as well as a storage for equipment and materials required by coaches and YDP activities.
As tournaments are being held in the swimming track region, the region is currently sheltered with temporary tents. This will be eased once the development project is completed, which will ensure the safety and protection of swimmers and the public.
The swimming track was temporarily closed in January this year, for the development work.
