Saudi Arabia has pledged its support for Foreign Miniter Abdullah Shahid's bid to chair the 76th United Nations General Assembly.
"RaajjeMV" understands that the Saudi backing was pledged via a letter sent to the Maldivian Government this past week. The letter was signed by influential diplomat, Adil Jubair, who is the State minister at the Saudi Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Ministry has not disclosed any information on the matter thus far.
The ongoing 75th session of the UNGA will conclude next year, and a vote will be taken amongst member nations to select the Chair, sometime mid-year.
In addition to this, Maldives has also expressed its intention to run for the of UN Human Rights Council as well.
A foreign Ministry official speaking to RaajjeMV said the ongoing efforts on the diplomacy front will enable Maldives to enhance existing relations with the international partners. He added that this will further vocalize Maldives on the world stage on matters of human rights and climate diplomacy.
