Four members have been appointed to the Civil Service Commission of the Maldives (CSC).

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the appointment on Thursday, after the members received parliamentary approval on August 31.

Appointed are Ibrahim Rasheed, Mohamed Farushath, Fathimath Shareef and Mohamed Nasih who took their oath of office during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Thursday.

The new members’ oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad.

During the ceremony, the president presented the new members with their Letters of Appointment.

The parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee interviewed a total of 41 individuals who applied for the vacancies out of which 13 names were shortlisted.

On July 13, four positions at the commission became vacant after three of them - President Ali Shameem, Vice President Shaheed Mohamed and member Zakariyya Hussain- resigned amid impeachment motions at parliament.

Abstaining from taking a vote on their removal, the parliament passed to remove Ibrahim Shaheeq from the commission with the votes from 48 parliamentarians.

With the parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions decision to remove the four members, only one out of the five members remains; Fathmath Amira. Amira was given the opportunity to respond via writing.

The parliament committee initially looked into five issues linked to three of the members, President Shameem, Vice President Shaheed and member Zakariyya. The five cases include injustice in terminating CSC employees, using undue influence in appointing a few posts, issues within members and the appointment of some members to the commission.

The Civil Service Commission consists of five members.
