Health officials have been expressing concern over the possibility of the country’s health care system being overburdened

The percentage of occupied hospital beds reserved for coronavirus patients in the capital region has risen to 62 percent.

Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) spokesperson, Dr. Nazla Rafeeq revealed this via Twitter on Sunday, adding that everyone “must work together and act now” to protect loved ones.

This is a four percent increase from the previous week, and a 55 percent increase from the first week of July. While the country entered the third phase of lockdown easing on July 1, there has been a spike in daily infections since.

While health officials have been expressing concern over the possibility of the country’s health care system being overburdened following a huge surge in cases, there are currently 169 patients receiving treatment at hospitals, including 10 in intensive care while five patients are on ventilators.

There are two hospitals dedicated for Covid-19 treatment in the Malé City region; DH11 and DH16 in Dharumavantha Hospital and the recently established Hulhumalé Medical Facility. The latter has a 250-bed capacity while DH11 has 10 beds and DH16 has six.

Covid-19 treatment facilities were recently established in five regions across the country.

All facilities comprise of 20 beds and 30 ICU beds. Covid-19 testing is also be available at the facilities, as well as ventilators.
