Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has been appointed to the post of Minister of Tourism.

This was announced by spokesperson at the President’s Office, Ibrahim Hood, via Twitter.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the appointment on Thursday and he was presented his letter of appointment during a special ceremony at the President’s Office, where his oath was administered infront of the president.

Dr. Mausoom filled the position of Ambassador of Maldives to Singapore prior to his appointment to a ministerial post.

With major experience in the tourism industry having served in the post during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as well, Dr. Mausoom has a Doctor of Philosophy from the Birmingham University in the United Kingdom.

He worked as an administrative officer at the tourism department during 1985, as well as in the frontlines in the tourism promotion board established to help the Maldives tourism sector recover from the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 and provided his services to Villa Resorts.

Dr. Mausoom also worked as a Deputy Minister of Tourism. He is also a former member of parliament who represented the Kelaa constituency and served as the Parliamentary Group Leader for Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).

Other services provided by Dr. Mausoom include Vice President of the Jumhooree Party.

On July 9, President Solih officially dismissed Ali Waheed from the post of Maldives Minister of Tourism after he failed to follow through with the president’s orders to resign following complaints lodged against him regarding inappropriate behavior towards employees at the ministry.

However, Waheed denied these allegations, having asserted that “time will tell the truth”.

According to the employees, the minister has been sexually harassing employees “for a long time” during the ministry’s trips to resorts. Since then, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is probing the allegations and authorities even seized his passport on July 12.

Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail was in charge of the tourism ministry’s affairs following his dismissal.
