Mohamed Tholal has been elected the President of the Maldives Athletics Association, for a third tenure.
The association’s presidential election was held at Boalhage, Henveiru-ward of capital Malé City on Wednesday morning.
Two individuals including Tholal contested in the election.
Tholal beat his opponent, Yazny Nasheed with ease, with the votes from 15 members whereas Yazny fell behind with just one vote in favor of her appointment to the post.
12 clubs and five individual members took part in the poll.
During Tholal’s presidential tenure which began during 2012, the association obtained a number of achievements which include the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) during 2015 as well as the South Asian Games of 2019 during which Maldives bagged gold.
Having been elected the association’s president for the third tenure, Tholal stressed that a number of athletics events might have to be cancelled this year due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, adding that they will try their best to hold possible events.
Highlighting that the past four years were successful, Tholal noted that they had put in a lot of efforts to take the country’s athletics to new heights within the past four years.
The biggest goal of the next four years is to bag a medal in the Commonwealth Games, said Tholal.
The President further noted that he will work to re-brand the association within the commencing term.
Ahmed Azeel, current Vice President of the association was re-elected to the post during the election.
