The Maldives Customs Service has revealed that Maldives imports dropped by 36 percent for the month of June in comparison to the same period last year.
Customs revealed through their month-end statistics that the country’s imports had decreased by 36 percent and the exports had dropped by 33 percent, within June.
Goods worth MVR 2.1 billion were imported to the country and goods valued at MVR 217 million were exported during the month as well.
During the month of June, customs recorded the highest imports of machinery and mechanical and electrical appliances at MVR 408 million. Second comes food items worth MVR 293 million, followed by base metal and articles of base metal valued at MVR 210 million.
The category to have imported the least amount was tobacco, alcohol and pork at MVR two million.
The major countries to have imported to the Maldives during June include;
- China, 18 percent of goods worth MVR 379 million,
- India, 15 percent of goods worth MVR 317 million
- Singapore, 11 percent of goods worth MVR 231 million,
- Oman, nine percent of goods worth MVR 191 million,
- The United Arab Emirates, seven percent of goods worth MVR 148 million.
Major commodities exported from the Maldives include prepared and preserved Skipjack worth MVR 43 million and Frozen Yellowfin Tuna worth MVR 30 million.
The major exporting countries during June include;
- Thailand, 28 percent of goods worth MVR 46 million,
- Italy, 12 percent of goods worth MVR 19 million,
- United Kingdom, 10 percent of goods worth MVR 17 million,
- Germany, 10 percent of goods worth MVR 16 million,
- United States, seven percent of goods worth MVR 12 million
Statistics further reveals that the number of declarations processed for 2019 sits at 16,864 whereas a major decrease was seen for 2020; 6,593.
