HRCM president resigns
 
All five members at HRCM, including Eanas and Afreen, were appointed during the previous administration
 
A motion to dismiss all HRCM members is being reviewed by the parliament
 
Commission member Aishath Afreen has resigned as well

President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), Aminath Eanas has resigned from the commission, along with member Aishath Afreen.

While the two resigned from the commission, a motion to dismiss all HRCM members is being reviewed by the parliament.

Further, the President’s Office opened applications for four membership posts at the commission last week, as the terms of four of the incumbent members are set to expire soon.

The Human Rights Commission Act states that HRCM must comprise of five members.

All five members at HRCM, including Eanas and Afreen, were appointed during the previous administration.

A number of lawmakers have stated that the commission has failed to fulfill their responsibilities. This was especially highlighted during the debate held over the prison audit report, in 2019, and there were calls to remove the members the as well.
