Member of Parliament for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir has called for the immediate resignation of Speaker and Former President, Mohamed Nasheed.
In a letter addressed to the speaker, the Kaashidhoo MP wrote that he does not believe Nasheed has the capability to maintain the responsibilities and duties of a Majlis speaker, in light of his current actions.
As such, the MP wrote that recommencing sittings inside the parliament chamber at a time a nationwide State of Public Health Emergency is in effect and during a lockdown order is a “conspiracy” to soil the integrity of MPs and degrade their good name in front of the people.
This, he said was done at a time the government is in dire need of support from the People’s Majlis and the MP accused Nasheed of politically influencing parliament proceedings at this critical time.
Stressing his belief that Nasheed is not fit for the responsibilities of Speaker, Jabir called for his immediate resignation.
The People’s Majlis reconvened sittings at the parliament house on May 26 under the special instructions and approval from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) after placing the bill on amending the Maldives constitution on the agenda.
HPA gave the authority under the condition that special protocols be followed which includes the use of face masks at all times as well as maintaining social distancing and screening MPs for flu-like symptoms.
