The People’s Majlis has passed the report compiled by the parliament’s Judiciary Committee regarding the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report compiles a set of recommendations to follow when working to ensure the country’s judicial sector does not come to a complete standstill due to the lockdown imposed across the Greater Malé Region due to the wide-spreading Covid-19 pandemic.

53 members unanimously voted in favor of passing the report during Tuesday’s online sitting.

The report is based on a motion submitted by the MP for central-Henveiru constituency and Majority Leader Ali Azim on March 30, seeking Majlis approval on the implementation of the government’s program to overcome the challenges facing businesses as well as families due to the precautionary measures being implemented by the government to contain and control the spread of coronavirus.

According to the committee report, the main purpose of the committee’s proposals is to ensure state institutions and the government work together to face the State of Public Health Emergency declared due to the virus and to ensure work of the courts, tribunals, and all judicial institutions does not come to a standstill.

This includes working in a manner that ensures the maintenance of human rights principles, ensuring good governance, ensuring justice, constricting the possibility of facing challenges and losses if the sector comes to a long-term standstill as well as ensuring cases do not pile up.

The report includes separate proposals for all institutions in the judicial sector.
