The number of Covid-19 cases in Maldives capital, Malé City has reached 62.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) made the reveal via Twitter on Tuesday morning, adding that five of the new cases are Bangladeshi nationals while eight of them are Maldivian patients.

With this development, the country’s total number of confirmed cases has reached 82.

Authorities are working to trace the contacts of the newly discovered patients, patients 70 to 82, and they are currently being transferred to an isolation facility.

At a press conference held in the afternoon, Dr. Ibrahim Afzal revealed details of the 13 cases, as well as of the two cases (Patients 68 and 69) reported early Tuesday morning;

  • Case 68: Bangladeshi, works in Kuda Villingilli
  • Case 69: MNDF staff
  • Cases 70, 71 and 72: MHA employee and two family members
  • Case 73: Maldivian, traveled with Patient 68
  • Cases 74 and 75: Contacts of Patient 36
  • Cases 76, 77 and 78: undocumented workers at Imaduddin school
  • Case 79: contact of Patient 31
  • Case 80: contact of Patient 35 (colleagues at Bank of Ceylon)
  • Case 81: Maldivian male, 80-yo
  • Case 82: child of Patient 35

Several new cases have been emerging on a daily basis since the first case of a community transmission was unfolded on 15 April. Following this, authorities declared a lockdown across the Greater Malé Region for a 24-hour, which was later extended to a fortnight on Friday.
