Even with the most stringent measures, over 97,000 people are to contract the coronavirus in the Maldives.

Dr. Sheena Moosa stressed this at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) daily Covid-19 briefing on Friday, adding that the country does not have the capacity to treat such a number.

Noting that this is the lowest number of expected cases at this point, the doctor said that it depends on the public’s compliance to social distancing orders.

As such, a total of 97,015 people are expected to be hospitalized with 75 percent compliance (which is the target) while 100,563 cases are expected with 50 percent compliance and 100,605 cases with 25 percent.

25 percent compliance

· Hospitalized: 100,605

· ICU Ventilator: 43,240

· Peak: Day 17

50 percent compliance

· Hospitalized: 100,563

· ICU Ventilator: 43,222

· Peak: 32

75 percent compliance

· Hospitalized: 97,015

· ICU Ventilator: 41,697

· Peak: 86

Dr. Sheena added that the 19,468 people are expected to test positive within the first 14 days since the discovery of the first community transmission case but that it will only be 23 given that there is 75 percent compliance.

According to the doctor, deaths could reach 2,000.
