Authorities have warned of an unprecedented spread of the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in the Maldives, if the people do not strictly and obediently adhere to the instructions, orders and regulations set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) during these trying times.
This was revealed by Dr. Ibrahim Afzal during a press conference on Thursday night, held to update the public on the recent developments in the country.
As such, the doctor revealed that although the authorities have been implementing several measures in order to contain the disease, these efforts will go in vain as long as the people continue to violate orders by relevant authorities, instead of cooperating with the authorities.
Highlighting that now is the time the people’s cooperation is needed, more than ever, Dr. Afzal stated that authorities will be able to control and contain the spread of the fatal virus if the people follow instructions.
However, if the people do not adhere to the guidelines set by HPA, the country will see an unpredicted spread.
Stressing that some people are seen violating measures set by the government and gathering on the streets despite the government having banned gatherings of more than three individuals, he said that when we look at these scenarios, the number of contact identified through contact tracing for the positive cases in the capital city is higher than expected.
Afzal stated that the government had begun enforcing these rules long before the lockdown, however, authorities have constantly observed individuals going out for rides, fishing trips as well as gatherings.
With this being said, the doctor highlighted that Maldivians need to change their lifestyle. As such, he stated that although the government were to lift the lockdown, the disease will not be controlled if the people do not adequately change their lifestyles.
Highlighting that 207 contacts have been identified through the Maldivian patient discovered from capital city Malé, Afzal stated this shows how much the people have been considering social and physical distancing.
Further, the doctor stressed that the best way to contain the virus is by staying home, and urged everyone to not go out unless completely necessary.
As of Friday, there have been 25 confirmed cases in the country. Out of this number, 16 patients have recovered and currently being treated are all local cases.
