Maldives has expressed interest in running for the presidency of the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the decision comes as part of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s foreign policy under which the country has been putting in immense efforts to strengthen bonds with foreign countries and make itself heard.
As such, Maldives has reached the decision to vie for UNGA 76 presidency and work is underway to garner support from other foreign countries and the ministry has highlighted that the friendly nations will "surely" accept a candidate from the Maldives.
An official from the ministry told RaajjeMV that while the Maldives has expressed interest in running for UNGA presidency, that a candidate is yet to be finalized adding that this person "will be someone who will be able to garner support" from the international community.
During former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s final year as president, Maldives had contested for a seat of the UN Security Council as well. While Maldives received 46 votes to remain as a non-permanent member of the Security Council from 2019 to 2020, Indonesia won the seat as the non-permanent as the member to represent the Asia-Pacific Region with 144 votes.
