PGO to appeal Innamaadhoo Court's decision to release assault suspects

PG Shameem stated that the magistrates ignored the facts that were presented, resulting in “miscarriage of justice”

Arrested were a 38-year-old and 48-year-old

Attacked was a 28-year-old Bangladeshi national

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has decided to appeal the case where two suspected of attacking an expatriate in Innamaadhoo island of Raa atoll, were released, at the High Court.

This was revealed by the Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem via Twitter on Monday.

As such, Shameem noted that the two suspects were released by the island’s magistrate court despite the Maldives Police Service (MPS) having submitted evidence against them.

Following this, the PGO reached the decision to seek the Maldives Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to look into the issue where the magistrates ignored the facts that were presented, resulting in “miscarriage of justice” alongside appealing the decision at the High Court.

Police received the report of a 28-year-old Bangladeshi national who was working on the sewerage system on the island, being attacked by two locals.

Arrested in the case was a 38-year-old and a 48-year-old, they were arrested under a court order. However, they were released upon being presented for their remand hearing.

The attack is to have occurred after the expatriate made a complaint against the 48-year-old.
