President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been briefed on the latest updates on safeguards being implemented to prevent the Novel Coronavirus (COVID19) from emerging in the Maldives.

During the meeting, held at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon, discussions revolved around further strengthening measures being taken against the fatal infection, with relevant stakeholders, Cabinet Ministers, institutional heads and leading experts.

Solih asserted that the government highly prioritizes the safety and well-being of Maldivians, some of whom are also living abroad.

Stakeholders were questioned on the latest measures put in place as well as the capacity of relevant institutions to implement stricter measures in the event of a possible outbreak in the country.

Further, discussions revolved around how to maximize preventative measures by discussing strategies for a possible situation of an outbreak, taking into account, real-life situations and preventative measures that have been sanctioned internationally.

In conclusion, the president stressed on the importance of appropriate involvement and implementation of precautionary measures, in light of which Solih urged authorities to remain watchful and prepared to protect the people from the global epidemic.

A special taskforce comprising of government stakeholders and experts was established following the global epidemic, which began from China during December. The taskforce is tasked with expediting the required precautionary measures at any cost and organize a timely intervention.

The taskforce has been involved in efforts to implement effective safeguards and strategies, some of which include border control at all entry points, screening of all travelers entering the country, training frontline staff in operations, establishing dedicated isolation facilities equipped with round-the-clock medical services as well as campaigns to raise awareness through verified information regarding the deadly virus.
