President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that the administration is making efforts to present a bill proposing amendments to the Judges Act & Judicature Act during this year.
During the presidential address at the parliaments first sitting of the year held on Monday, the president acknowledged the parliament's support for the administration's efforts to establish social justice, stability and build public trust in the country's judicial system.
The president went onto highlight the bills proposing amendments to legislation of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Code of Civil Procedure, adding that the administration is working towards presenting bills to parliament that propose amendments to the Judges Act and Judicature Act.
Revisions were made to the Judicature Act last year as well, reverting the number of members on the Supreme Court bench from five back to seven, as it was originally stated.
The number of seats on the Supreme Court bench was changed to five from seven during former President Yameen's regime after he removed then-Chief Judge Ahmed Faiz Hussain and Judge Ahmed Mu'thasim Adnan.
In addition to revising the number of seats on the Supreme Court bench, all previous members of the bench have since been removed with the exception of Judge Abdulla Areef, who retired.
There are currently five members on the Supreme Court bench with efforts being made to fill the remaining two vacancies.
