He was arrested on Thursday night

Man arrested over the murder of Gasim Hassan has confessed to the crime.

Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed, who on Thursday confirmed the arrest of a suspect, revealed that he has since confessed to killing Gasim.

The commissioner added that the man is “cooperating with the investigation.” He has been issued a 15-day remand.

The 59-year-old taxi driver was stabbed to death on the night of 4 December; he was found lying face-down in a puddle of blood and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Further noting that the clothes the culprit wore when he committed the murder were recovered in the investigation, Hameed stressed that forensic evidence “has been the key to solving the case.”

The clothes are to have been hidden in the vicinity of the crime scene.

Police on December 12 revealed that they had leads in the murder, having retrieved crucial evidence from the murder scene including fingerprints and DNA. They also found the murder weapon, about 300 metres away from where Gasim’s body was discovered in Hulhumalé.

The police continue the investigation, and are currently corroborating evidence and further forensics.
