The opposition has criticized Mariyam Waheedha, the newly appointed president of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), after she hosted a government event.

Mariyam hosted the “Burabi” event held at Dharubaaruge on Tuesday night, where the tourism ministry announced the islands to be leased for tourism.

While the opposition has questioned Broadcom’s independence over the matter, Maduvvari constituency MP Adam Shareef Umar stressed that “sincerity is what matters for all.”

The People’s National Congress (PNC) party official further noted that the previous administration was accused of “influencing independent institutions” over such matters.

As such, then opposition had criticized Broadcom members for taking part in the government’s events including campaign events.

Mariyam was appointed to the commission earlier this month, and was elected as its president through an internal vote the same day. A media veteran, she has been the master of ceremonies at a number of events held in the country.
