President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared 22 October as the National Youth Day.

The decision was reached following consultation with the cabinet ministers, where extensive discussions were held on the matter.

During the cabinet meeting, ministers highlighted that 22 October was a day to be marked in history as the bill enabling voting rights for Maldivians 18 years of age, was implemented 12 years ago.

Noting the significance of enabling voting rights for the youth, ministers highlighted that the bill was passed with the efforts of People’s Majlis members, which in turn validated the day as a day that is significant for youth empowerment.

National Youth Day has been celebrated on different dates over the past.

The government is set to celebrate the day with vibrant festivities in the coming year.
