Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Kaashidhoo constituency MP, Abdulla Jabir has filed a case against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at the Civil Court, again.
This time Jabir is seeking to distrain the former president’s residence, should he fail to pay MVR 29 million owned to him.
MP Jabir had previously said that he had lent the money to Gayoom “to assist in the work to consolidate democracy” in the country.
Jabir claims that they had agreed for Gayoom to pay him back with interest.
While Jabir had filed this case at the police earlier this year, police had initially rejected it due to lack of evidence. Jabir filed the case a second time with evidence, but withdrew the case after ‘forgiving’ Gayoom in October.
The MP revealed that this was his mother, Maryam Manik’s, wishes, whom he said has a close relationship with the former president. Jabir had also said that that he did not intend to take the former president to court over the matter.
While Jabir claims to have lent Gayoom MVR 29 million ahead of the 2018 presidential elections with interests, he denies this.
