Majlis gets heated over Judge Hailam's 'audacious' Victory Day greeting

Ruling party parliamentarians maintain that Judge Hailam received bribes

The disorder spurred after ruling party MPs debated over Judge Hailam's message, showing figures, some political, in chains

The parliament’s sitting heated up on Monday over Criminal Court Judge Ahmed Hailam’s Victory Day greeting.

The leaked image in question, shows Victory Day martyr Corporal Hussain Adam leading a group of chained figures, some political, with a gun in hand, blood smeared across his chest and has the wordings “the respect and dignity has been robbed today”, scribbled above in Dhivehi.

In the audacious Victory Day greeting, two figures last in line show uncanny resemblance to Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed and incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Hinnavaru constituency MP Jeehaan Mahmood raised the issue at Monday's sitting, during a debate on a report by the judiciary committee.

When MP Jeehan began debating on the matter, opposition parliamentarians began creating disorder by sparking a heated debate and some even using a blare horn and blatantly whistling inside the chamber.

In turn, MDP members continued to debate on the matter, targeting heavy criticism towards Former President Abdulla Yameen and opposition figures.

While the verdict hearing in the money-laundering charges against Yameen is scheduled for Tuesday, Hailam is presiding over the case.

Ruling coalition members had also alleged that the judge has received bribe money to carry out the trial in Yameen’s favor.
